Being from the East Coast it is hard being a fish/seafood lover in Kansas City. Finally, I have found a spot that serves delicious, fresh, fried fish!!! I always get Whiting and French fries. The staff there are really pleasant and I look forward to frequenting the place when I am on that side of town.

This place is WONDERFUL! Tons of fresh fish. From catfish to red snapper to orange roughy & more! Fried to perfection. The portions are huge and the price is right. They have daily lunch specials and also specials of 1/2, 3/4 & 1 pound sizes that include sides & bread. Sides include hush puppies, okra, fries potato salad and a few other offerings. Be sure to get some "do it yourself hot sauce" to dip your fish in. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed!

This place is amazing. Such a friendly staff too! I don't eat fish in KS because I'm from California and am used to fresh fish. But I tell you this....visit here and you won't be disappointed!

This has been a favorite for a long time and one that I don't get to indulge in much anymore. Which is probably a good thing for the waist line! There are a bunch of options on the menu. A handful of fish selections, chicken tenders and wings, some sandwiches, a bunch of sides, and a few desserts. Outside of the sides, I can only speak to the catfish. Excellent! Nice boneless filets with a light cornmeal breading, fried perfectly. Served with tartar or hot sauce, I get both and make a hot tartar sauce that is perfect. There is a huge list of sides, but if you get a dinner that giant list suddenly becomes about six. This is what prevents me from going to that fifth star. When eating a pound of fried fish, a person likes to justify it with a healthy selection for sides, well at least I justify it that way. The only healthy side they have is green beans and this isn't even an option with the dinner. You can get fries, fried okra, three mayo based salads, hushpuppies (I think) and maybe a couple of other fried items. If you want a different side you can not substitute and have to order it separately (even though many of them are the same cost individually.) This is a major fail for me, both the lack of healthy sides and the lack of being able to get them with the dinner. Service is always great. The ladies will take care of you. You may not get super friendly, but I have never had a rude experience. They are efficient hard workers that any employer would be proud to have. The restaurant can be a little messy during busy times, but the overall cleanliness is suburb. You can tell they take pride in the business. They have a drive through, but it is only for call in orders. Don't expect to pull up and place an order. Go inside and order if you want it to go. I would love to see this business become a citywide franchise, my waistline wouldn't, but best fish place in the city! And add some veggies! :)

My husband and I were told about this great fish restaurant with hometown feel and since we're always up for a daytrip of exploration, we found the City Fish Restaurant. When we walked in, the menu was posted clearly, but being newbies, we had a few questions. The order taker was obviously not too interested in answering questions and answered with such inaudible and irritated responses, we just ordered and hoped for the best. We realized afterward, there were different options which would have been better had the person taking the order cared, but that was not the case. We thought maybe some were having a bad day and the fish was pretty good(hence the two star rating), but didn't like the green beans and they were way too expensive for the serving size. Prices were moderate, depending on what you ordered. We went a second time because the fish is good-with a Groupon and more steeled for the ordering process with experience under our belts. Same experience. Attitude, irritation, rudeness. When our takeout order came up-we thought it might be ours and it did turn out to be-no one called our name and we sat there about 15 minutes. Finally my DH went to the counter to check on it and the person at the counter said they didn't know and turned around to scream the question, which was answered after about a minute. There were no people in line, no one waiting - and-we are very low maintenance. We don't expect a lot of care, just decent attitudes. Overall, the many kinds of fish offered makes me question, like another reviewer, about the difference, since they did taste the same to us, but we thought it was good. The fries were pretty tasteless, but you get quite a lot and with catsup and salt, what can you say? If you can overlook the rudeness, the attitude, poor service and not very clean eating area-we never saw anyone come out to wipe up spills or tables-then you should try it. For us, we will never go back because there are other places to try that quite frankly, like to see you visit their establishment. Sadly, maybe a long time ago this was a good place, but our two experiences within several months of each other yielded the same result.

Best catfish in the city! Great food, great prices, and friendly people! One of my favorite restaurants in the city!

I love catfish and this town can be spotty trying to find really great catfish. I was happy when I came across this place because it seemed like they built their reputation on their catfish. I can say the service was efficient, nothing more, nothing less. I got some catfish with hushpuppies and coleslaw. The catfish is cut into pretty small strips which I don't really like. It's like trying to give you a little less. If they would just give me less pieces and make them bigger it would have been better. The catfish was okay. It did have a distinguishable "fishy" taste that catfish can have and I don't care for that. The really fresh catfish that I've had can taste almost buttery but this stuff didn't. It tasted like catfish that just wasn't quite at the freshest it could have been. I did like the seasoning. Also, the catfish & breading was not greasy at all and came out piping hot. I got the sides of hushpuppies and coleslaw and just thought both of those were okay. Nothing to really remember about them. This place is quite a ways away for me to go there so I am not sure I would come back or go out of my way to go again. Kind of a "been there, done that" joint.

This too is a KCK institution. I remember when this joint was right on 27th street near a used car lot. The fish is always fresh tasting and good catfish fix. When you are jonesin' for your fish with good tarter and hot sauce those in the Dotte know this is the place to get it. Check groupon for the deals as well but know they are only good for eat in order. Because of this I am taking a star. Another thing that is keeping me from giving it 5 stars is some of the snarky teenagers they have working there. I have complained to management about them and it makes me think the one particular one with the glasses is related to the owner. The rest of the staff is PRIMO!! If you see him at the counter don't let him fix your order and if you do check it. Besides that the fish and the sides are work the trip to the DOTTE.

Hubby and I were craving catfish...boy oh boy did we find the best! The lady at the counter could tell we were newbies and immediately handed us a plate of catfish to sample. She explained the specials and before we knew it, we had more catfish, fried okra, coleslaw and potato salad than any normal person should try to consume. Prices were very reasonable, place was clean. When we asked for a couple of to go boxes, the entire staff was willing to help and asked of we enjoyed our meal. We will be back.

Started eating at the original City Fish Market while attending high school in KCK. We used to buy whole fresh/raw catfish fillets and deep fry at home. Not much has changed at City Fish besides they built a brand new building and stopped selling fresh fish some years ago. I try to make it over to City Fish 2-3 times a year. Had lunch there earlier in the day and wanted to let you know just how good this place is. The building is 5 times the size of the old one. Still the same local owner who lives North of the River and I rarely see him in the restaurant like I used to. The years have seen some rather peculiar characters swing by City Fish. Homeless, drug dealers, prostitutes, gang bangers, law enforcement, church officials, city government, Mayors, famous athlete's, and famous Hollywood actors have all frequented City Fish. The product inside City Fish is that good. Worthy of a Food Channel or Travel Channel celebrity visit. I have a feeling what could be holding City Fish down from gaining national exposure..........that would be; some of the rudest and most brutal cooks and cashiers I've ever witnessed in my life! Think I'm exaggerating? Ha, not a chance. Anybody who has frequented City Fish has war stories to tell. You need to look no further than a sign that hangs prominently smack dead in front of the ordering counter. It basically gives the owners phone number (not sure if it's a recording or actual cell of the owner). Think of the TIP's Hotline but for City Fish instead. It clearly states that if you, the customer are mistreated in any fashion by City Fish employee's, then call the number. Now me personally, I think it may be a little fluff and nothing else. I highly doubt the owner brings the hammer of God down on his employee's because I still see some of the same crude employee's manning the kitchen and counter on all my visits. If you think Gates BBQ is bad, you ain't see nothing. Anyhow, most everyone I talk to is able to look beyond the negatives because City Fish's positives far outweigh anything preventing folks from returning and eating their fabulous food. Let me start off by saying the fish is pretty darn consistent. The go-to fish at City Fish has somewhat changed from Catfish and now geared a little more towards Basa. For those that don't know, Basa is a type of Catfish native to Vietnam that is cleaner and lighter than traditional catfish caught in America. Trust me, this stuff is so good it's unexplainable. Light and flaky with a crunchy cornmeal coating that is succulent with or without hot sauce. If you have never tried it, do yourself a favor and give it a shot. The other fishes at City Fish are very good as well. Orange Roughy, Buffalo, traditional Catfish, Tilapia, and Whiting are good choices. The daily specials have risen a little in price but still a great bargains. Most fish selections are available as fish and bread or combos with side items. Plenty of side items that resemble a soul food restaurant. Their french fries are so good. Great potato salad, cole slaw, and hush puppies. Don't forget about the homemade deserts that include cakes and sweet potato pies. Another big plus is the availability of strawberry soda in the fountain machine. There are pump stations full of hot sauce, ketchup, and I think tarter sauce. Napkins are a scarcity at City Fish. They are stingy like hell with the napkins and you are gonna need extras so good luck getting more than 2 napkins. The neighborhood isn't all that bad. Situated fairly close to downtown KCK. Most folks come to City Fish to enjoy a great meal and the drama is usually started by the staff and not the customers. Lots of call in orders occur here and plenty of carry out business. There are dining room tables and everything is self serve. Thank God, because I highly doubt the waitresses would get any gratuity tips with their attitudes. The tables are the weirdest texture I've seen in a restaurant. The tops are somewhat sticky and rubbery. Everything sticks to the tables including crumbs, soda, your plates, cell phones, your arms, etc. Kinda nasty but I often overlook this small detail. I've tried the other fish establishments in KCK and KC, MO. None are as good as City Fish IMO. The one place that irks the hell out of me is Jumpin Catfish out in Olathe and Lees Summitt. People want to claim they are the best. That is an insult to City Fish and not even worth discussing. One last thing, why in the world would anyone go to Long John Silvers and pay similar prices for that junk? City Fish in my mind is the King of all fish houses in the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan region. Not even close! Go see for yourself.

O!!! M!!!! G!!!!! I don't even know where to start. All I have to say is JUST GO!!! This little gem is tucked away in Wyandotte County and apparently has been hidden from me for years. So I have a lot of catching up to do! Simply put, this is the best fried fish I've had since I've lived in Kansas City. The batter was incredibly seasoned, not overcooked and you could tell the fry oil was fresh and not old. When you walk in to the restaurant, the aroma of cooking fish is just intoxicating! And don't be in a rush - your order is cooked when you order it! The food is desperately fresh and just so freaking good! I had the talapia (sp) and my husband had the catfish. You have a choice of ordering a 1/2 pound, 3/4 pound or a full pound of fish, along with succulent sides. Oh by the way, the cole slaw is amazing! There were a lot of cars in the parking lot and a lot of people in the restaurant, which is always a good sign! You can also get hot sauce (maybe it's their own blend) and tartar sauce to go along with your fish. I realize I'm going all over the place and I'm probably kind of scatter brained. Suffice it to say City Fish & More is freaking outstanding. As I said in the beginning, JUST GO!!!! You will not be disappointed.

I am a fan of City Fish. The ONLY reason that they didn't get a 5 star rating is because their customer service is spotty. I have ate there a handful of times. The first couple of times the ladies behind the counter were so freaking RUDE! It would appear that the owner is trying to get a handle on this problem, as he has posted a couple of signs stating that if you get treated bad to get the name of the employee and call him immediately. With that being said, this is the place for fried fish. The shrimp basket that you get for 5.99 is HUGE! About 2 handfuls of crinkle cut fries, 5 hushpuppies and about 15 piece of fried shrimp. You can't go wrong! It is a platter for sure! The red beans and rice are yummy also. The basa is seasoned well and fresh! The food is good ya'll!

Well, over a year later I have to say that the sting of my last visit hasn't faded and I see that a Groupon shows the business is interested in expanding its client base. I went on a very slow mid afternoon on a Saturday and while the food was good, the service was atrocious! I don't need much, just the bare minimum of lowest level communication and courtesy. It seemed it was like some kind of lottery as to who had to wait on the next customer (me, Ms harmless, ordinary looking person) and the loser was......Very curt, which was unnecessary as I am extremely easy going. I would say it was hostile bordering on hateful service. Interesting that a business would be interested in new business using Groupon and have a staff designed to drive them off or haze them just to order. The food was pretty good after the burn from such rude treatment subsided from ordering through payment. I am a very low maintenance customer. I just expect the minimum of service, to the point, no frills or extra attention required. I know how to order clearly and succinctly with no expectations of coddling, however, I do expect a reasonable amount of assistance if I have simple questions about the menu. I will try it again so I won't miss out on a restaurant that I would normally enjoy a great deal but I am not feeling all that hopeful.

Holy Mackerel! City Fish in the grittier end of KCK is fish-tastic. It's great to find a classic fried seafood restaurant right here in land locked KC. I was skeptical at first that this place could offer the same quality fried seafood I had grown accustomed to on the east coast. Well batter me up and call me a fried convert because CF delivers. For weeks my wife has been raving about the fried catfish, apparently all the guys she works with make this a weekly stop. So, taking her advice, I sat down to a Catfish #2 with fries and hush puppies. The fish is breaded without a hint of grease and the fries and puppies make the perfect compliment. I'm looking forward to my next visit. The only problem will be deciding to go with the Catfish again or trying one of the menus other offerings.

This place is the bomb for fried fish dinners. No one does it like they do. I've been to City Fish on many occasions, but, I have to agree with Whit M., so many times, I would go and be met with surly, ill-tempered people with bad attitudes and a total lack of customer service. Ask a question? Get stinkeye and a snarky remark. Put your hand out, draw back a bloody stump. I hated going in here but, the food was just too good so what I would do, is limit my visits to Lent. Catholic Fridays I call 'em. Now, last year, I stayed away from this place and enjoyed an occasional Walleye Dinner at Culver's which is also pretty awesome. But it's way out in BFE for me. Well, this past Friday, I was on my own and the idea of Long John Silver or Captain D's was enough to gag a maggot. I don't live far from City Fish and I heard the mermaids' sultry song from a distance...calling...tantalizing...teasing...OK! I'm hooked. I slid into the cab o' my truck and bolted down State Avenue to the Fabulous Fantasy of Fried Fish. Like I said, it was a Catholic Friday. The lot was full and I followed a stream of people into the joint and the place was hoppin'. People all over the place. I was second in line. Then it was my turn. The young lady asked me if she could help me. No attitude. No snarl. No snarkiness. What? I knew what I wanted and quickly ordered the #2 Catfish, boneless, fries and slaw and large Dr. Pepper. uh-oh...dare I ask? I'm a tartar sauce addict...might I get extra...ok, I'll pay for it..."you don't have to pay for it" the young lady shrugged.."I'll give you some extra" She gave me my ticket and I waited 5 minutes and my dinner was ready and the lady was really nice. I noticed the other people on the counter were pretty decent too. Wow! That's really nice! I want to give City Fish some more business! I hate, hate, hate going somewhere and paying the servers, bartenders, service people to be mean, snotty and rude to me. That's what caused me to avoid City Fish so many times. Mama didn't raise no dummy. You want to be rude and churlish...I can go somewhere else and not waste your time with my worthless business...there ya go! How's that? Awright y'all! I got my delectables home and turned on the TV and alternated dipping the crispy on the oustide, tender and tasty on the inside catfish fingers into hot sauce and then tarter sauce...ding, dang...dongly wongly!!!!! DAYAMN! That sho' nuf is some mighty fine fish Missy! And the fries and cole slaw are a perfect accompaniment but listen up y'all. They have other things and they're good too! Greens, mac and cheese...yikes! DEEELISHUS! You know, it's a blessing to know when a food joint wants you to enjoy the whole experience of their offerings and I don't care how tasty your food is...if your servers and service personnel suck...then so do you and so does your establishment. Like I said earlier...I'm not paying someone to cop a bad attitude on me. Thank You City Fish & More for getting it right! Keep up the good work and I will be back and I'm sure many others! I know you all work hard back there in that hot, crowded environment but we love ya and we appreciate ya and the food is AWESOME!

I love the catfish here. If the counter help punched me in the mouth I would still eat that sweet meat. Just realize this simple fact: you are eating in the ghetto. Logic would then dictate that the service can be a bit... ghetto. It happens. Is the fish worth the risk? Shoot, dummy, I wouldn't go otherwise. THE FISH IS AWESOME!

Yum! Yum! Yum! I had never dined inside, and it had been forever since I've had CF, but it did NOT disappoint tonight! I got a #3, half catfish, half orange roughy, with macaroni salad and fried okra. It was like I'd died and gone to heaven. Juicy morsels of fleshy fish, hot and fried to perfection. I have no idea how they fry their fish and keep them from dripping grease. I love their hot sauce, too. Like a hybrid of Louisiana and Frank's. Whatever it is, it complements their fish perfectly. And their okra is never soggy...crisp, but not so heavily breaded that it compromises the texture of the awesome veggie bites. Admittedly, their macaroni salad is nothing special, but I chose it as my second side anyway. I should've paid extra to get their spaghetti side. (I call it "black people spaghetti" because it's nothing like "white people spaghetti".) I will be sure not to make this mistake next time. Their interior is nothing to write home about. Awkward tables, covered in some weird, rubbery material, I couldn't even slide my tray across the table. Odd. They also had self-serve sauces you could pump into paper cups - tartar, ketchup, and hot sauce. I didn't try the former two. I hate venturing far from JoCo, but it's worth the trip for CF. I can't wait to go back!

Very, very good food. Get the basa instead of the catfish because it tastes "cleaner" and not as fishy. Also, the hush puppies are the best I've ever had.

Absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!! If you like old time fried fish that is not dripping grease this is your place, Love the fact I can mix Orange roughy and catfish and enjoy fresh bread and hot sauce or tarter which ever is your liking! This place reminds me of the fish we used to make at the lake nicely flavored and not overcooked! If you want okra they have it too, the menu variation is awesome you gotta try it!

Yummy, crunchy fish! They offer several kinds of fish but they all taste pretty much the same--good. Deep fried corn meal magic!

  • Whit M.

Don't get me wrong I love the crap outta those catfish nuggets (hence the 2 stars) but after a 20 min drive from joco to this place each time it'd be nice if just once the person taking your order didn't act like they hated life... and you. Oh and dont dare to ask any questions while ordering! I'm a pretty bubbly person but the service here kills the mood each time to where I don't even wanna eat inside, swear I can't grab my order n head out the door to nibble in my car quick enough. Basically: lousy service, tasty enough fish to keep u coming back anyway

Was in the area getting some work done on our car and originally planned to go to Mad Jacks on State Ave. The guy at the garage recommended City Fish & More over our initial choice so we took his advice. We were not disappointed. This is a fried seafood place so if thats what youre looking for, here it is. We had the fried Basa (of which a sample was offered to us upon walking in. Free fried fish sample? Uhhh yeah?!?!) along with fries (crinkle cut, meh) and hush puppies (awesome) and some fried mushrooms. We could barely finish our meals there was so much. The fish wasnt greasy in the slightest and has a delicious cornmeal coating which went excellent with bread and hot sauce. Nothing fancy and nothing pricey. We ate for under 15.00. Fantastic service with a smile to boot. I cant wait to go back and try their other menu items of which they have many. Fried and boiled shrimp by the basket or the pound (fish comes same way)... chicken strips... burgers... and a small army of different fried starters.
